Why Many Expats Use an Insurance Broker in Spain
In my recent video about healthcare in Spain, quite a few readers and viewers asked a similar question:
How do you actually arrange insurance in Spain⦠and should you use a broker?
Itβs a very good question, because insurance in Spain can be more complicated than many people expect β particularly when it comes to health insurance, visa requirements, and pre-existing medical conditions.
So I thought it would be helpful to explain why many expats choose to work with an insurance broker rather than dealing directly with insurance companies.
Why Insurance Works a Little Differently in Spain
In the UK, most people arrange insurance directly.
You compare policies online, choose a provider, and thatβs usually the end of it.
In Spain, however, many people β including Spanish residents β actually use insurance brokers or agents.
A broker acts as an intermediary between you and the insurance companies.
Instead of contacting multiple insurers yourself, the broker helps identify the most appropriate policy for your circumstances.
Why Brokers Are Especially Helpful for Expats
For expats, there are a few additional complications.
First, language.
Insurance policies can be detailed documents, and when theyβre written in Spanish itβs not always easy to feel completely confident about what is covered.
Second, there are often specific insurance requirements linked to residency visas.
For example, many people applying for Spainβs Non-Lucrative Visa need a policy that:
β’ is issued by a Spanish insurer
β’ has no co-payments
β’ has no waiting periods
β’ provides comprehensive medical coverage.
Choosing the wrong type of policy can sometimes delay or complicate a visa application.
A broker who understands these requirements can help ensure the policy is compliant from the beginning.
Pre-Existing Conditions β One of the Biggest Challenges
Another area where brokers can be particularly helpful is with pre-existing medical conditions.
Conditions such as:
β’ diabetes
β’ heart issues
β’ previous cancer
β’ high blood pressure
can affect how insurers assess applications.
Some policies exclude these conditions, some charge higher premiums, and others may decline cover entirely.
A good broker understands which insurers are more flexible and how best to present medical history so that policies are arranged correctly from the start.
Thatβs important because incorrect or incomplete declarations can sometimes cause problems later if a claim is made.
One Contact for All Your Insurance
Another advantage of working with a broker is convenience.
Insurance needs often change over time.
You might need:
β’ health insurance
β’ home insurance
β’ car insurance
β’ pet insurance
β’ or landlord insurance if you rent out property.
Having a single broker who understands your situation means you always have one person to contact if you have questions, need to renew a policy, or need help making a claim.
For many expats, that continuity makes life much easier.
Does Using a Broker Cost More?
This is a common concern, but in most cases using a broker does not increase the cost of your policy.
Brokers usually receive their commission from the insurance companies themselves.
In fact, because brokers can compare policies from different insurers, they can often help find better value coverage.
A Broker Iβm Happy to Recommend
Over time Iβve spoken with a number of brokers here on the Costa del Sol.
One Iβm comfortable recommending is Nathalie at Nathβs Insure & Realty, who regularly works with British expats across Spain.
Her team helps arrange a range of policies including health, home, car and pet insurance.

Final Thoughts
Insurance is one of those practical details that most of us hope weβll never need.
But if something does go wrong, having the right policy β and the right person helping you navigate it β can make a huge difference.
